Flea Control
Reliable and Effective Pest Control for Fleas
Fleas
The most common flea infesting homes is the cat flea, which readily bites humans. The human flea and bird flea are the next most important. Although dog fleas are relatively rare, other species of flea may use dogs as a host.
As adults, these small (2mm) wingless insects feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. Flea bites can cause irritation around a bright red central point although the degree of reaction, and the length of time it take to react, varies from person to person.
The larvae live in the nest (or bedding) of the host, feeding on skin and the droppings of the adult fleas. When fully grown the larva spins a cocoon and waits there until it detects the vibrations caused by a potential host. Only then does it emerge.
This is why the first people to enter a property that has been standing unoccupied for some time will be bitten by fleas emerging from their cocoons after detecting the vibration of footsteps.
Birds’ nests in lofts or the eaves of a building can be the source of a bird flea infestation.
Treatment
We recommend that you refer to your veterinary practice for advice on treating infested pets. Any infested bedding should be burned.
For badly infested buildings a professional treatment is necessary. Your pest controller will select an insecticide that will treat the flea infestation quickly and effectively. The treatment will be applied into all cracks and crevices in walls and floors.
If there are birds’ nests in the loft or eaves, these should be removed.
