Reliable and Effective Pest Control for Harlequin Ladybirds

Ladybird (Harlequin variety)Harlequin Ladybird (harmonia axyridis)
The harlequin ladybird is a recent introduction in the UK that has the potential to jeopardise our native species.

The Harlequin ladybird is native to the Far East, but was introduced to several European countries to control pest insects such as aphids in greenhouses. However, it was soon found living wild in Belgium (2001), Germany (2003) and the UK in 2005.

During the peak period of activity in Autumn, the harlequin ladybird is seen in large numbers on the outside of buildings. Although they do no damage to the fabric of the building, they can cause particular distress to residents when they enter buildings in large numbers. They can be found overwintering inside buildings coming out of their hiding places during mild weather. If they are disturbed these beetles produce a foul smelling liquid which may stain fabrics.

Once a building has had an infestation of these beetles, it is likely that it will suffer repeated infestations with the ladybirds re-appearing every Autumn in large numbers.

Treatment
For properties that have regular problems with ladybirds entering the building, proofing of entry points will reduce future problems.

A residual insecticide professionally applied into crevices and entry points around a building will kill harlequin ladybirds, but care must be taken to minimise any adverse impact on our native ladybird species which may also be present in the same hibernation sites within buildings.
